Youth Music Programs at St. Paul Lutheran Church

The St. Paul youth music staff members are professional musicians with years of experience in teaching and conducting youth.  Ethan Smith is the Director of children's choirs which includes Music and More (grades 6-12) and Kids of the Kingdom (grades K-5).

St. Paul offers basic music theory to children from first grade through fifth grade.  These lessons are designed by Albuquerque Public Schools music educators, and are taught by experienced musicians.  The lessons last for the first 30 minutes of each Thursday practice, and incorporate games and instruments to make them fun!

Each year in Spring, the Kids of the Kingdom present a full-length musical based on a story from the Bible. Last year, the group presented Malice in the Palace: The Story of Esther.  A special concert after Sunday worship featured children in full costume, with well-rehearsed acting and singing galore.  It was a blast!!! Children are invited to participate in musicals to the best of their interest and ability, and are not required to have solos - unless they want to!  All parts are made as equal as possible to ensure that our musicals are presented without "stars" but as an ensemble effort.

FAQ

When is it?
Kids of the Kingdom (grades k-5) meet Sunday at 8:15 - 9:15 a.m. Room 15 downstairs.  They sing about six times throughout the year, on Christmas Eve, and in a musical in the spring.  The Music and More group (grades 6-12) meet Sunday at 11:45 - 12:15 upstairs in the "blue room."  We sing and play handbells five times throughout the year and for various special occasions.

Who can join?
Anyone!  You don't have to be a member of the church, have been in choirs before or even be a Lutheran!  St.
Paul Lutheran Church is a church that welcomes anyone who would like to be involved.

Where is the church located?
St. Paul Lutheran church is located at 1100 Indian School Road NE.  That's on Indian School just west of University.

Is it just singing?
It's much more. The children's choirs play accompaniments on Orff instruments and many rhythm instruments.  All members of the choir are taught to use the instruments and they are used in performance as well.  The Music and More choir also performs on handbells and sometimes accompanies another group that is singing or we play with the organ during a hymn.  Instruments are a great benefit when learning to read music and add an exciting element to the sounds we can create.
